“Numerous Lapses”
Yeah, coach Amodu, that’s one way to see our craptaculous midfield, which has been a consistent caveat in our recent good form.

To keep my expectations in perspective, I came of age in football during the hey-day of Sunday Oliseh and Jay-Jay Okocha blazing across the midfield and setting the imagination on fire, so I have pretty high standards
Still, I’m honestly not quite sure what exactly the problem is in the midfield. Technical proficiency exists in younger players like Mikel Obi and Kalu Uche, both of whom have really begun to bloom. Coupled with someone like Olofinjana’s experience, we should at least have an average to good midfield, instead of the merely passable one we’re currently fielding.
Like I said on the event of his formal retirement, Nigerian football has been hurting since Okocha’s international retirement, and that vacuum still exists. I wish Amodu luck on his search, and perhaps he’ll find the play-maker who’ll lead us to the trophy.

Understatement of the Year Nominee
Weighing in as front runner, we have Ivory Coast coach Vahid Halihodzic declaring his side as “average.” Yeah, and if you believe that, I’ll give you some great odds on the Bafana Bafana winning the World Cup.

On an unrelated note, now might be a good time to disclose my eternal envy ... [read]
Apologies and Remainders

It’s been far too long since my last post and the world as we know it has changed a little bit. Mine has been a tale of woe in the interim (whatever the opposite of serendipity is, that’s what happened to me). Still, bright spots abound and many excitements lie ... [read]
RSA-NGA (0:1) Take 2, Game in Review

First off, we kept our sheets clean. Woo-hoo! What a game! Enough has been said about the craptaculous pitch that the players had to endure, so I’ll say no more.
My question is, “Did the Bafana Bafana really deserve to lose?” (more…)

Port Elizabeth Preview

Coming off a respectable 2nd place finish in Beijing with the wind at our backs, we turn our attention to the next slate of qualifying matches with our eyes ever fixed on South Africa (for the actual tourney). The bad news? (more…)

The NFA Strikes Again

The Nigerian Football Association (NFA) is something alright. I have always marveled at their consistent ability to get exactly nothing right. My first recollection of this peculiar power was an ill-fated bid to host the 2002 World Cup that was over before it even began due to “administrative issues” ... [read]
Trophies or Thrills?

Despite their recent victory streak, Coach Shaibu Amodu and his Super Eagles have been criticized for not having enough flair. This criticism has been so much so that Asst. Coach Fatai Amoo was forced to go on the record and tell people to just chill out. He made a salient ... [read]
Farewell, #10

Jay-Jay Okocha formally retired from football this past week. 20,000 fans gathered in the torrential rain to watch his farewell match. Arguably the best player that Nigeria has ever fielded, he has already been missed since his retirement from international football in 2006. He has left a vacuum ... [read]
Where Do We Stand?

One step closer to SA2010, that’s for sure. Coach Shaibu Amodu is on the receiving end of (very well deserved) praise and admiration. All is well, let champagne flow from the heavens.
So why this insistently nagging feeling that something dire is about to happen? On the merits ... [read]
After the First Test

On Sunday, the Super Eagles played the Bafana Bafana in Abuja with great success. On the merit of technical soundness and overwhelming possession (65%) and two first half goals (10′ Ikechuckwu Uche, 44′ Obinna Nwaneri), the Super Eagles dominated South Africa. In the words of Nwankwo Kanu, (more…)
